My journey in Nutritional Immunology

How do I first started into this journey of Nutritional Immunology? It has all started with the poor health of my girl after entering childcare & I have always been against medication due to my past experience - I am on medication due to migraine since I was 10 years old. My liver has never been good due to all these medication taken. About 3 months into childcare, my girl could go school for one day & sick for the remaining 4 days which is super unacceptable for me. Whenever I brought her to PD in KKH emergency department due to her high fever, the doctor always mentioned viral infection & asked me to keep feed her paracetamol / Ibrufen that made me even more uncomfortable as her liver is still not fully grown to withstand such strong medication & medication will cause her liver to work harder to detoxify this "unwanted" substance.  This situation causes me to search for alternative solution - build her immune system to fight all these bad virus or bacteria. ...

Disease-fighting nutrients

Polysaccharides - a carbohydrate structure that produces a long chain of Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen cells. Carbohydrates provide energy in the body and it is the first thing burned when one exercises to lose weight. Without carbohydrates, one would often feel weak, dizzy, and have low blood sugar. Benefits of polysaccharides? (1) enhance the mood by increasing the amount of feel-good chemicals in the brain - make people feel happy (2) support healthy blood sugar levels - important for diabetics -  Diabetics should eat these complex carbohydrates instead of simple carbohydrates that enter the bloodstream to quickly and cause an unsafe spike in blood sugar.  (3) promote cardiovascular health and immunity health and prevent many degenerative diseases like heart disease (4) liver function improves (5) fatigue seems to melt away (6) great effect in the intestine - improves intestinal health, helping to reduce colon cancer, and slowing things down so that the energy is re...

Immune System

Image
A healthy immune system can prevent diseases & help our body stay healthy. However, when deprived of sufficient nutrients, the immune system becomes weak & unable to defend against cancer & other diseases therefor we fall sick. The human body requires a constant supply of nutrients. When one is healthy, balanced nutrition can help prevent illness; when ill, adequate nourishment aids in recovery. The Immune System is a precious gift that nature has bestowed us. It can be likened to a powerful army designed to protect our health. At any given second, the immune system efficiently mobilizes different immune battalions to launch a complex and concerted attack against the invisible enemies - disease-causing pathogens, such as viruses, that threaten to wreck havoc in our bodies. Researchers have worked hard to develop drugs that boast higher efficacy in fighting newer and deadlier diseases. But drugs cannot effectively substitute the complicated functions of our immune system. ...

Why do we fall sick?

Actually most people like me do not know that why we keep falling sick. But fortunately due to some coincidental situations - my girl keeps falling sick after going to childcare, I get to know someone who shares about the knowledge of our immune system. Firstly, let us see what is immune system - immune system is a network of cells, tissues, and organs that work together to defend the body against attacks by "foreign" invaders. These are primarily microbes such as bacteria, parasites, and fungi that can cause infections. Viruses also cause infections, but are too primitive to be classified as living organisms.  It is the immune system’s job to keep them out or, failing that, to seek out and destroy them. When the immune system hits the wrong target, however, it can unleash a torrent of disorders, including allergic diseases, arthritis, and a form of diabetes. If the immune system is crippled, other kinds of diseases result.  The immune system is amazingly complex. It can r...
